Flu Vaccinations

Before each flu season, the CDC determines which strains of influenza appear to most likely occur that year. The vaccine will still reduce your chances of contracting certain strains of the virus and if you do get sick, having the vaccine can significantly reduce the severity of your symptoms, time off work for adults, time out of school for children, and prevent medical visits. The CDC recommends that all persons over six months of age should get their flu shot yearly. Stop by Aron’s Pharmacy to get your yearly flu shot. It only takes a few minutes to help boost your immune system! All you have to do is fill out our consent form.

Shingles Vaccinations

Shingles vaccination is the only way to protect against shingles and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), the most common complication from shingles. CDC recommends that adults 50 years and older get two doses of the shingles vaccine called Shingrix (recombinant zoster vaccine) to prevent shingles and the complications from the disease. Adults 19 years and older who have weakened immune systems because of disease or therapy should also get two doses of Shingrix, as they have a higher risk of getting shingles and related complications.

Shingrix provides strong protection against shingles and PHN. In adults 50 years and older who have healthy immune systems, Shingrix is more than 90% effective at preventing shingles and PHN. Immunity stays strong for at least the first 7 years after vaccination. In adults with weakened immune systems, studies show that Shingrix is 68%-91% effective in preventing shingles, depending on the condition that affects the immune system.

Adults 50 years and older should get two doses of Shingrix, separated by 2 to 6 months. Adults 19 years and older who have or will have weakened immune systems because of disease or therapy should also get two doses of Shingrix. If needed, people with weakened immune systems can get the second dose 1 to 2 months after the first.

If you qualify as a recommended recipient of the shingles vaccine or have questions, please call your Aron’s Pharmacy pharmacist at 318-323-2242.

Pneumonia Vaccinations

There’s no such thing as pneumonia season, like flu season. If you and your doctor decide that you need to have a pneumonia vaccine, you can get it done at any time of the year. If it’s flu season, you can even get a pneumonia vaccine at the same time that you get a flu vaccine, as long as you receive each shot in a different arm.

Experts recommend that infants, older adults and some high-risk people get the pneumococcal (pneumonia) vaccine.
