Sidney David (Dave) Aron founded Aron’s Pharmacy in 1942. In 1964, Aron’s Pharmacy moved to the location Northeast Louisiana has come to know and love at 1209 N 18th St – it was one of the first buildings on the block! When Dave’s health began declining, his son returned home to assist at the pharmacy in 1968.
Carl W. Aron was a licensed pharmacist for the state of Louisiana since 1962, taking over his family’s business in 1971. He was appointed to the Board of Pharmacy in 1971 by Gov. John McKeithen and continued to serve the board for over 50 years with 25 of those years serving as President. Carl was the longest serving member on any Board of Pharmacy in the country. He was appointed Lifetime Honorary President of the NABP and was elected President Emeritus of the Louisiana State Board of Pharmacy. Carl won many prestigious awards during his pharmacy career including the Bowl of Hygeia Award for Community Service from the LPA and the Meritorious Achievement Award from the College of Pharmacy at ULM. In 2006 the NABP presented their highest honor, the Lester E. Hosto Distinguished Service award to Mr. Aron. During the 2021 regular session of the Louisiana Senate, Resolution 96 was passed congratulating Carl on 50 years of service to the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy.
Carl was integral in instituting the “Prescription Monitoring Program” for the State of Louisiana, an electronic system for monitoring controlled substances and drugs of concern dispensed in the state or to an address in the state. This system was picked up by almost every state in the U.S. soon thereafter to fight the opioid crisis in our country.
“Dad’s biggest legacy, I think, is community service. He wanted to serve the people of Monroe. Many people can tell you that they would call him at 2, 3 in the morning and he would go down there and fill a prescription for them and not bat an eye. He took care of a lot of hospice patients too, and that was just his life’s work. He truly lived to practice pharmacy and serve the community.”

After his passing in January of 2022, Aron’s children, Melissa Gillum, David Aron and Debbie Kennedy, and the Aron’s Pharmacy & Diner team continued the Aron’s legacy. In February of 2023, Jay Howell, DDS, and wife Ariana, Pharm D, joined professional forces as the new owners of Aron’s Pharmacy & Diner.
Jay has established many popular restaurants in the Northeast Louisiana area, including Restaurant Cotton, Planter’s, The Eli, and Okaloosa, while Ariana graduated with her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Harding University in May of 2020. When the opportunity to purchase Aron’s Pharmacy & Diner arose, it presented itself as a way for the two to combine their professional passions.
